MY ADDICTION
The High. The Habit. The Crash. The Surrender. The Freedom.
The music gets louder. The lights get brighter. The bass drops. For a few hours, nothing else seems to matter. A pill. A drink. Another night out. Another party. Another escape.
For some, it is simply part of the weekend. For others, something much deeper is happening.
My Addiction is a series about what happens when the escape becomes the lifestyle — when something that once helped you forget your problems becomes the problem itself.
Addiction rarely starts with the intention of destroying your life. It can begin with curiosity, experimentation, fitting in, dealing with pain, wanting to feel something, wanting to feel nothing, or simply chasing that next incredible high. Over time, the occasional drink can become every weekend. The occasional pill can become something you need. A habit can become a routine, and a routine can become an identity.
Eventually, you may not even know where the habit ends and you begin.
The dance-music world has always carried an association with freedom, rebellion, intensity and escape. The same environment can also expose people to alcohol, drugs, peer pressure and behaviours that can become destructive. Research has found associations between electronic dance-music preferences and higher levels of substance use among adolescents, while South African reporting has documented how drugs can become intertwined with party culture and youth social environments.
My Addiction doesn’t pretend that world doesn’t exist.
We are going straight into it.
We will talk about pills, alcohol, drugs, parties, addiction, bad habits, peer pressure, escapism and the search for something that makes us feel alive. But we will also talk about what happens when the party ends.
The empty room.
The morning after.
The anxiety.
The regret.
The secrecy.
The promises to stop.
The promise that this is the last time.
And then doing it all again.
Because addiction is not simply about the substance. It can become a pattern of thinking, behaviour and escape that gradually takes control of our choices. What began as something we did can eventually become something we believe we are.
That is where recognition becomes important.
There comes a point when we have to stop asking, “How can I hide this?” and start asking, “What has this become?”
Do I control it — or does it control me?
The My Addiction series will explore how addictive patterns begin, how destructive habits become deeply embedded in our lives, why breaking them can be so difficult, and what happens when we finally admit that we need to change.
But this series is not going to end in darkness.
The ultimate theme is surrender.
Not giving up. Surrendering the illusion that we can continue doing the same thing and somehow remain unchanged. Surrendering the excuses. Surrendering the secrecy. Surrendering the version of ourselves that we have built around the addiction. And discovering that freedom is possible.
You are not your addiction.
The monster may have become part of your story, but it does not have to become the ending.
The music can still play. The lights can still shine. The night can still belong to you.
But this time, you don’t need a pill, a bottle or another escape to feel free.
